SolarEdge EV Charger Procurement Checklist: PV Inverter OEM and Compliance Checks

A procurement-focused checklist for B2B buyers, distributors, and installers evaluating SolarEdge EV chargers, PV inverter OEM suppliers, microinverter catalogs, and PV inverter compliance requirements.

If you're buying SolarEdge inverters and EV chargers for a distribution business or an installer fleet, this checklist is for you. I've spent six years managing procurement for a mid-size solar distributor. I manage a seven-figure annual equipment budget, which makes me allergic to hidden costs.

This is not a spec sheet. It's a six-step checklist for the procurement traps that don't show up on the first page of a datasheet.

Who should use this checklist

Use it when you are evaluating SolarEdge EV chargers for residential, commercial, or fleet projects, or when you are comparing inverter architectures for PV systems.

  • You're comparing a microinverter catalog with a SolarEdge string + optimizer system.
  • You need to verify PV inverter compliance requirements before signing a purchase order.
  • You're sourcing from a PV inverter OEM or manufacturer and need to know which checks matter.

If that's you, here's the checklist I wish I had during my first year of buying solar equipment.

1. Build a TCO model before comparing unit prices

The biggest mistake in solar equipment procurement is comparing unit prices before defining total cost. Total cost of ownership includes the quoted price, freight, lead time, payment terms, warranty handling, commissioning support, and the cost of a failed unit in the field.

It took me three years and about 40 purchase orders to understand that the lowest quote is not the lowest total cost. One example from my own records: a vendor undercut the competition by $14 per inverter. After adding freight, a longer lead time, and missing connection accessories, the cheap unit ended up 6% more expensive than the option I passed on. The difference was way larger than the paper price suggested.

Our procurement policy now requires three quotes with identical commercial terms. That single change saved more money than any price negotiation.

2. Verify the PV inverter compliance requirements before you order

Compliance is not a paperwork exercise. It's the difference between a project that connects to the grid and a project that sits in a warehouse.

In the US, grid-tied PV inverters should be listed to UL 1741 and meet IEEE 1547 interconnection requirements. EV charging equipment, including a SolarEdge EV charger, should meet UL 2594 and UL 2231, with NEC Article 625 as the installation reference. If you're shipping to Europe, ask for the CE declaration and the relevant harmonized standards.

I'm not a compliance engineer, so I don't rely on my own reading. I ask the manufacturer for the certificate, confirm that the model number matches, and have our technical team review it. A missing certificate is a red flag. In some cases, it's a deal-breaker.

3. Know which kind of PV inverter OEM you actually need

The phrase PV inverter OEM gets used two ways. Some buyers use it to mean the original equipment manufacturer who owns the product line and the brand, like SolarEdge. Other buyers use it to mean a factory that makes inverters under your own brand.

Both models can work, but they require different checks. If you're buying from a branded manufacturer, verify the product line, warranty ownership, and factory test reports. If you're buying white-label, the biggest question is who owns the compliance documentation and warranty liability. The brand on the front does not tell you who handles an RMA in year three.

For our business, the branded route is usually the right fit because we need support and clear documentation. But if you're a large distributor with a strong brand strategy, a white-label OEM might be worth exploring. The key is to make that decision before you ask for quotes.

4. Read the microinverter catalog side by side with the SolarEdge catalog

If your project pipeline includes both microinverter systems and SolarEdge string + power optimizer systems, you will be reading at least two catalogs. The microinverter catalog and the SolarEdge catalog should be evaluated with the same questions.

Check model numbers, PV module compatibility, DC/AC ratio limits, temperature derating, communication modules, and warranty registration. A side-by-side comparison helps you calculate inventory complexity. More SKUs usually means more money tied up in spare parts and a higher chance of installing the wrong product.

A catalog is not a compliance document. It's a sales tool. Use it to find the right model, then verify the model-specific certificate separately.

5. Evaluate the SolarEdge EV charger as part of the energy system

For most of our installer customers, the SolarEdge EV charger is not bought on standalone specs. It's bought because it works with the same inverter platform, storage system, and monitoring app they already use. That integration is a no-brainer for an installer who is already in the SolarEdge ecosystem.

From a procurement perspective, that means the compatibility list matters more than peak output. Confirm the specific inverter model, communication setup, connector type (J1772 or NACS depending on your market), and whether the charger supports load management. Load management is one of those hidden costs: if a bank of chargers requires a service panel upgrade, the quote gets a lot bigger.

If you're buying chargers for a fleet, ask about scheduling, energy reporting, and time-of-use settings. These features determine whether the charging system actually saves money.

6. Put warranty, RMA, and return terms into writing

Warranty terms are financial terms, not just technical terms. The important questions are: who ships the replacement first, who pays freight, does the warranty cover labor, and how are non-covered failures handled?

Don't assume the standard warranty includes everything. I only believed in spelling out return and RMA terms after I skipped that step once and paid an 18% restocking fee on a canceled order. Since then, every PO includes restocking, freight, and lead-time terms. (Note to self: I should finally turn this into a one-page guide for our sales team.)

When you evaluate any manufacturer or OEM, ask for the full warranty and RMA process before you issue a purchase order. If a vendor hesitates to provide it, that's a red flag.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing only unit price. Total cost, lead time, and support are part of the real price.
  • Skipping the PV inverter compliance check. A missing certificate can stop an installation after the equipment has shipped.
  • Mixing up branded manufacturer and white-label OEM. They have different warranty and compliance ownership.
  • Assuming the SolarEdge EV charger is automatically compatible. Check the exact inverter model and monitoring platform.
  • Forgetting to document return and RMA terms. Hidden fees hide in those clauses.

Bottom line: whether you are adding SolarEdge EV chargers to your product mix, comparing a microinverter catalog, or vetting a PV inverter OEM, the same rules apply. Define the total cost, verify compliance, and get warranty terms in writing.

This approach has worked for us because we are a mid-size distributor with predictable quarterly ordering. If you're a small installer running a different kind of operation, some of these steps will look different. Your mileage may vary, and that's fine.
